National Creative Market Day (NCMD) is a day to raise awareness of the entire community, and particularly how markets and their stallholders are a huge asset to our country.
Here at Pedddle, we’re working to highlight the benefits of these artisan and creative markets, to keep them thriving for many years to come, so that they can benefit future generations too.
We wanted to highlight some of the ways that markets will be beneficial in future. Tune in to our Instagram page @PedddleUK on Saturday 5th October 2024 to hear chats about this and much more, but for now, here are ways that creative markets will help generations to come…
6 ways that creative markets will help generations to come
- A nod to our heritage and history. You can read more about acknowledging Britain’s market heritage here and why it’s important to uphold the things these marketplaces offer.
- Driving economic growth. The artisan sector can generate income, provide employment, and drive economic growth in multiple ways. In fact, we recently wrote a blog about this and had a deep-dive – read it here.
- An outlet for creativity and craftsmanship. Craftsmanship, making handmade goods, and artisan skills, have been passed down for generations, but in this day and age, they aren’t necessarily able to be passed within the same family as they used to be. Markets offer a place to pass on skills, so the next generation can learn them and keep them alive.
- Promoting sustainability. Artisans can help promote sustainable practices, such as shopping from small businesses, and integrating traditional techniques with more modern manufacturing methods (and modern marketing methods like social media), can help build a more sustainable future. We actually have a few blogs about Sustainability – click here to read them.
- Supporting entrepreneurs. Our recent blog explores how markets support creative entrepreneurs, and why that is so important.
- Supporting social cohesion. Markets and businesses that support artisans can strengthen social cohesion, particularly by providing employment opportunities for young people, women, and marginalised communities that perhaps do not have as many chances to cultivate their entrepreneurial skills as elsewhere.
