Do I need a card reader for selling at markets?

Do I need a card reader for selling at markets? It’s one of the questions I’m most I’m asked by stallholders.

It’s Nicki here, Pedddle Founder. Today I’ll be talking you through whether you need a card reader for selling at markets. The answer is YES, you do!

I recently created a YouTube video about this – click here to check it out – it’s under 2 mins long!

This blog will explore more comprehensively the things I touched on in my YouTube video. With lots of people moving to card-only payment methods, here’s why it’s a great idea…

Do I need a card reader for selling at markets?

The answer is YES!

Here’s why:

  1. The Covid aftermath. Many people stopped using cash after Covid, largely for hygiene reasons. Instead of handling money that multiple people have touched, simply swiping your own card or phone is much cleaner.
  2. Convenience. These days, lots of people head out of the house without even bothering to carry a bag. If all of your money can be in an app, why weigh yourself down by carrying extra stuff? The world nowadays makes it super easy to simply pop your phone in you pocket and walk out of the front door, no need for a wallet or purse! Having the option to pay with Apple Pay is extra useful because of this.

Is cash useless now?

NO!

Cash is still floating around, as some people will always prefer to pay in cash. It’s therefore a good idea to have a float with some spare change, especially if your products are odd prices (e.g. £4.99 or £18.25).

It’s always useful to have multiple methods of payment, so that you don’t miss out on sales if, for example, you don’t have a card reader and the customer doesn’t have cash, or if they only have a £20 note and your products are a fiver. You never know, so cover all bases.
