Manchester and Liverpool are two of the UK’s most vibrant cities, each very proud of their heritage. They love a good celebration, so when we looked into which markets are worth visiting in these cities in 2023, we decided to create a list of The Best Independent Christmas Markets in Manchester and Liverpool just for you!
Let’s start in Liverpool – the home to the Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in Britain’s pop history. More recently, the proudly played host to the Eurovision Song Contest. Liverpool is equally as proud of the infamous Albert Docks, Sefton Park and the Palm House, Liverpool One and of course the iconic Liver Birds.
You really could do a tour of markets over the next few months in this city alone!!
Let’s get into the markets there… and some of Best Independent Christmas Markets in Manchester and Liverpool
If you love the Makers Markets, they have many events happening at The Albert Docks Makers Market with 3rd November and 5th December still remain for 2023 and in the Bombed Out Church Makers Market in the centre, 19th November and 17th December, still remain for 2023. If you are happy to venture further afield to Chester, the Makers Market in Exchange Square is also hitting all the Christmas vibes.
If you haven’t yet visited the Pop-up in the Palm House for previous events, now is the time time to head out to it for their winter edition. It’s a wonderful event in every season but we particularly love the Winter Market. It runs for 3 days 17th-19th November and offers annual events, so there’s plenty of chances to catch it in action. It’s free to enter and it’s a gorgeous little hub of a market.
Good market at Penny Lane Church is a relatively new event but it’s growing in popularity all the time. Their two remain dates in the church are 4th November and 2nd December. Good Markets are planning lots more in 2024 too!
Only a short drive or train journey away from Liverpool is the fabulous city of Manchester, where you can immerse yourself in the rich football heritage, the thriving arts scene, with theatres, galleries, and museum and more recently Media City, where most of the BBC broadcasting occurs – and home of the Lowry too.
The markets won’t disappoint. Of course you can head into the City to partake in the big Christmas markets that run through the streets of Manchester but if you haven’t headed out to the little independents to support local makers then you are missing out. Here’s a little list of markets to consider when planning your trips to Manchester.
Starting in the heart of Manchester is the Northern Quarter Makers Market with 2 remaining dates – 12th November and 10th December in 2023. Then over at Salford Quays is the Quayside Christmas Makers Market at Media City, which runs through most weekends now until 17th December. The Final Chorlton Green Artisan Market is on 25th November and this will be brimming with Christmas fun.
Then if you head out of the City Centre a little, you will find the fabulous Wilmslow Artisan Market (see image left), and Alderley Edge Christmas Artisan Market.
In between Liverpool and Manchester you will find Great Sankey, a cute town to walk around, and their Christmas market, in 2023 it’s taking place on Saturday the 16th December will also be a fab one!
