Who we are
Fatfinger Atelier is an independent artisan stallholder and craft market trader specialising in handmade ceramics and traditional Chinese pottery. Our work focuses on introducing high-quality handmade ceramics to the UK through artisan markets, makers markets, and craft fairs. Every piece we sell is entirely handmade by our own studio and other ceramic artists, reflecting the skill, creativity, and individuality that define true artisan craft.
As a handmade ceramics UK stallholder, Fatfinger Atelier is dedicated to presenting ceramics that combine cultural heritage with contemporary artistic expression. We communicate and work closely with ceramic artists and small studios to bring unique pottery pieces to craft markets where visitors can discover authentic handmade ceramics and Chinese pottery traditions.
One of our main collections is the Panda Series, a playful and expressive ceramic collection created in our studio located in Jingde town, China. Jingde town is known for its long history of porcelain making and has been one of the most important ceramic production centres in the world for centuries. Today, many young artists continue this tradition while exploring new creative directions in contemporary ceramics.
The Panda Series features charming hand-sculpted panda figures placed on teapots, cups, bowls, and everyday ceramic vessels. Each panda figure is individually shaped by hand, giving every piece a unique character and personality. One of the most distinctive features of the Panda Series is its vibrant and expressive colour palette. The ceramics are created using specially prepared coloured slip techniques, allowing soft gradients and layered tones to appear across the surface of each piece. The collection includes a variety of colour themes inspired by nature and emotion, such as deep ocean blues, forest greens, soft lilac tones, pastel candy colours, and warm pink hues. These colour combinations create a lively visual contrast with the small panda sculptures, making the pieces both playful and visually striking. Because all products are handmade, no two pieces are exactly the same. These ceramics combine artistic design with practical everyday use, making them suitable for tea drinking, coffee, and home decoration. The ceramics are fired at high temperatures to ensure durability while maintaining the rich colour transitions and textures created through traditional ceramic processes.
Alongside the Panda Series, Fatfinger Atelier also works with artists who produce Jian Zhan tea bowls. Jian Zhan is a traditional Chinese tea ceramic with a long history that dates back many centuries and is closely connected with Chinese tea culture. These tea bowls are made using clay that contains a high level of iron, which plays a crucial role in the final appearance of the glaze. During the high-temperature firing process in the kiln, the iron elements react differently depending on temperature, atmosphere, and firing conditions. These natural chemical reactions create dramatic glaze effects and distinctive crystal patterns across the surface of the bowl. Because this process cannot be fully controlled, each Jian Zhan bowl develops its own unique pattern during firing, making every piece completely one of a kind.
In addition to their visual beauty, Jian Zhan tea bowls are also valued for their practical qualities. The iron-rich clay and thick ceramic body allow the bowl to retain heat well, helping tea stay warm for longer during drinking. This makes Jian Zhan particularly appreciated by tea enthusiasts who value both the aesthetic and functional qualities of traditional tea ceramics. Many tea drinkers believe that using Jian Zhan enhances the overall tea-drinking experience by combining craftsmanship, natural kiln transformation, and the ritual of tea culture.
The Panda Series and Jian Zhan tea ceramics represent two very different ceramic styles. The Panda Series is colourful, playful, and expressive, attracting customers who enjoy character-driven handmade pottery and contemporary design. Jian Zhan ceramics reflect a more traditional aesthetic connected with Chinese tea culture, appealing to collectors and tea lovers who appreciate subtle glaze effects and classic tea ware forms.
Because these two ceramic styles are very different, Fatfinger Atelier is able to present a diverse range of handmade ceramics that can appeal to many different types of customers. Some visitors are drawn to the playful charm of the Panda Series, while others are fascinated by the traditional beauty of Jian Zhan tea ceramics.
Looking ahead, Fatfinger Atelier plans to collaborate with more young ceramic artists from Jingde town and other ceramic regions in China. Our aim is to bring a wider range of handmade ceramics and Chinese pottery to the UK craft market scene. Through artisan markets and craft events, customers will have the opportunity to discover different styles of high-quality handmade ceramics created by emerging ceramic artists.
Fatfinger Atelier believes that handmade ceramics carry the spirit of the maker and the culture behind the craft. By working directly with artists and presenting their work at artisan markets, we hope to share the beauty of handmade pottery and Chinese ceramic traditions with a wider audience in the UK.
