Christmas Markets: Shop Small, Buy Better This Christmas

Featured | At the Market | Christmas Markets

There’s something rather special about Christmas markets. The twinkling lights, the smell of festive food, a warming drink in your hands and the excitement of finding something a little different.

Over the last few years, German-style Christmas markets have become a familiar feature of the British festive season.

But there’s another side to Christmas market shopping that we’d love to see more people discover.

Because alongside the big commercial Christmas events, there are hundreds of independent Christmas markets across the UK, showcasing talented British makers, designers, artists and small businesses.

And perhaps this year, they’re exactly where we should be spending a little more of our Christmas shopping budget.

Not all Christmas markets are created equal

Let’s be honest, some of the larger Christmas markets have become quite commercialised.

You can wander around, soaking up the atmosphere, only to find yourself looking at products that seem very familiar. Items that are mass-produced, imported and perhaps not quite as unique as their festive packaging suggests.

This isn’t a criticism of every German Christmas market, or the wonderful traditions that inspired them. There are fantastic independent traders and genuine craftsmanship at festive markets across Europe.

But it does raise an interesting question.

If we’re going to spend our money at a Christmas market, shouldn’t we take a moment to think about what we’re actually buying and who we’re buying it from?

The difference between buying a product and supporting a person

Imagine buying a Christmas decoration that has been mass-produced in thousands, shipped across the world and sold at countless other events.

Now imagine buying a decoration made by a small UK business. You might have met the maker, heard how they designed it, discovered the materials they use and learnt a little about the business behind it.

Both might look lovely on your Christmas tree, but the story behind them is very different.

When you buy from an independent maker, your purchase means more than another transaction.

It helps someone pay for their materials, cover their business costs, invest in their next collection and, hopefully, pay themselves for the hours of work that go into creating something special.

These businesses aren’t faceless retailers. They’re people who have taken a chance, developed a skill, built a brand and put an enormous amount of themselves into what they do.

And Christmas can be one of the most important trading periods of their year.

Discover the independent Christmas markets across the UK

The brilliant thing about independent Christmas markets is the variety. You can find everything from handmade ceramics and jewellery to original artwork, home fragrance, clothing, festive food and beautiful homewares.

Shropshire, Northumberland & Staffordshire: Discover independent Christmas markets

Gander Christmas Market in Shrewsbury brings together around 40 independent makers, offering handmade gifts, festive food and plenty of inspiration for Christmas shopping. It’s a great opportunity to discover local creative businesses and find something a little different.

In Northumberland, Forage Christmas Market celebrates independent creativity, bringing together more than 45 makers and designers from across the North East. Expect original designs, handmade products and plenty of unique gift ideas.

And in Staffordshire, Stone Christmas Markets bring a festive buzz to the high street, celebrating independent makers, local producers and the small businesses that make our communities special.

If we must buy less, let’s buy better

We know that Christmas might look a little different for many people this year.

Budgets are tighter, household costs are higher and not everyone will be buying as many presents as they have in previous years.

But perhaps that’s an opportunity to change how we shop.

What if we bought fewer things, but put a little more thought into each purchase?

What if we chose something handmade instead of mass-produced? Bought from a local business instead of a faceless retailer? Found a gift that someone has designed, created or carefully sourced rather than something that will be forgotten by January?

It doesn’t mean spending more. It means making more considered choices with the money we do spend.

That’s why we’re championing our Buy Less, Buy Better campaign.

We want to encourage people to think about where their money goes, discover independent businesses and recognise the difference even one small purchase can make.

Because behind every small business is a person, a family, a dream and a lot of hard work.
