From contemporary art to traditional crafts, the Modern Makers are united in their passion for exquisite objects made with craftsmanship. The diverse group of makers whose work will be on display consists of ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, glass, weaving, printmaking, painting and textiles, along with some more unusual disciplines such as bookbinding, sculptural Jesmonite, wearable art and handmade lampshades.
Craftsmanship is integral to the ethos of the Collective, which is exemplified in the work of embroidery artist Yvette Phillips. Incorporating traditional embroidery methods and colourful vintage textiles, Yvette’s extraordinarily detailed and meticulous artworks are a wonder to see. Victoria Baker is another exceptionally skilled maker, her handcrafted leather handbags radiate sumptuousness, with fine details such as the soft suede interiors and careful hand stitching. Weaving craftswoman Mary Lowry uses very fine threads to weave her gossamer-like textiles. A medley of colourful silks and cashmeres are woven by Mary into the most beautiful scarves and shawls.
The market takes place in the quintessential village of Yattendon with it’s red brick cottages. Surrounded by the rural Berkshire countryside, Yattendon is a small hub of activity with it’s pubs, cafes, breweries and shops. The Modern Makers Collective delight in bringing an exciting mix of creativity into the village for it’s annual market, a joyful celebration of British made Art and Craft.
