Who we are

Hi, I’m Liz and I make handmade linocut prints, cards and bags.

The inspiration for my work comes from the natural world, plants, animals, insects and curiosities. I’m interested in colour and form and the juxtaposition of shapes and pattern.

My open and limited-edition linocut prints are designed and hand printed in Norwich, under the mantle of The Pepper Press.

Linocut is a new technique for me, having a background in drawing and painting for many years. I graduated from Bath Spa University with a degree in Fine Art, where I explored a very different approach to image making. My painting practice defined itself with its characteristics of control and an element of planning. Paintings were carefully considered and constructed, with as much emphasis on the ‘ground’ as the ‘figure’. Printing, by contrast, involves an area of chance or surprise. Planning the final image can change from its original point of conception and working in the ‘negative’ throws in its own challenges. The print reveal always creates something you haven’t designed or conceived. I like this chance; it helps me with direction and to question my practice.

I started my business to explore an interest I’ve had for some time and to see where it would take me, and I have just started getting involved in craft markets in person. It’s a great way to meet like minded artists and creatives and to meet the people who buy my work. I love meeting everyone and chatting about the creative process and the story behind what I make.
