Who we are
I work mainly in porcelain which is a very delicate but strong medium, and is perfect for exploring form and texture. The inspiration for my hand built sculptural ceramics and framed relief panels is derived from ever changing seasonal landscapes and environments, finding beauty in the textures, colours and patterns that are revealed in the world around us that evoke memories and emotions.
All pieces begin life as a direct response to my surroundings using drawings and photography of the world and the objects I love to collect. I then create my forms by layering porcelain and building up texture with slip or pressing materials, objects and collagraphs I have created, into the surfaces of my forms. I want to explore the cracks and crevasses created through this process, looking at the beauty of any imperfections that may appear as they do in nature.
My work utilises oxides and glazes to add colour and highlights, enhancing texture and rendering contrast and definition to surface areas. I feel the organic nature of oxides complement the inspiration for my work.
After studying Fine Art at Reading University, I went on to teach Sculpture, Ceramics and Fine Art for 13 years. I now work as a full-time ceramic artist in West Lancashire, England.
