Who we are
Hi, I’m Cally! I’m a textile artist living in North London and I create whimsical embroidered illustrations with my sewing machine.
My ‘Holloway Houseplants’ range of 13 plant designs are made with free motion embroidery using my 15-year-old Janome. I stitch them all from the houseplants in my North London flat using sustainable materials: recycled canvas and carefully sourced fabric scraps. The pieces are whimsical and joyful, and I enjoy exaggerating the juxtaposition between serious and silly.
I find that each plant has it’s own individual personality, and can’t stop sewing until its full character shines through. Sometimes that means stitching the same plant over and over with different fabric pots, to find the perfect match. Or it might mean unpicking the threads of a leaf several times until the lines are wonky in just the right way.
My work is a celebration of nature in an urban environment. I choose to use recycled cotton canvas and fabric scraps, as I feel this focus on sustainability and low-waste gives the art a stronger connection to the subjects they depict.
