Meet the Maker

This week’s Meet the Maker blog is all about our talented artists within the Pedddle community! We had a chat to KamsArthouse & Deer Dawn about how they started their artwork based businesses, the ups and downs they have faced, and what’s next for their small businesses.

This week’s Meet the Maker blog is all about our talented artists within the Pedddle community! We had a chat to Kamlash of KamsArthouse & Dawn of Deer Dawn about how they started their artwork based businesses, the ups and downs they have faced, and what’s next for their small businesses.

Pedddle: Tell us a bit about your business and how it started – e.g. where did you first become interested in producing your products/learn the skills it takes to produce them?

KamsArthouse: Hello, I’m Kam. I’m an artist and designer, born, bred and residing in Derby, UK. After studying Textile Design (specialising in print), I worked for several years as a print designer in the fashion and clothing industry. The children came along and I was lucky enough to stay at home as a full time Mum. The girls are both at school now and I found myself in the enviable position of following my ambition to become a full time artist. I’ve always loved to draw and paint and to be able to call this my ‘job’ really was a dream come true. KamsArthouse was founded during the first lock-down of 2020 on the kitchen table. Homeschooling was pretty non-existent, and me and my girls spent most of the time drawing and crafting (much less stressful than Maths and English)!

Deer Dawn: My name is Dawn Shade and I live in the beautiful rolling hills of Devon with my husband and my little Son.  It wasn’t until I had my Son when I was 34 years old that I started to paint.  He was one year old when I had a play with some paints and discovered a passion for it.  In this truly expansive time I rediscovered a part of myself again and my creativity unfolded.  I give thanks to motherhood which gave me the determination and focus to start my own business.

Pedddle: Following on from the first question, we’d love to know more about your process, the materials you use and what you’re inspired by.

KamsArthouse: My work is inspired by people, predominantly head studies. I’m fascinated how light casts shadows on the contours of the face and feel compelled to recreate them on paper. Graphite, coloured pencils and ink are my medium of choice, but I like to experiment with other processes, you never know when that happy accident will occur!

Deer Dawn: I work at home in my little studio, painting with watercolour and other mediums such as ink & pencil.  I am blessed to be surrounded by nature and beautiful countryside to constantly inspire my art.  My main focus is creating greeting cards, which I love to create and have since I was a teenager!  I now combine my love of design and my passion for painting to make unique art cards.

Pedddle: Do you remember your first selling experience?

KamsArthouse: The day my Etsy store went live I made 5 sales it completely blew me away. People actually paid money to buy art that I had created, it was surreal! It was a massive boost to my confidence,  despite the constant battle with imposter syndrome!

Deer Dawn: My first selling experience was doing a Christmas market at my Son’s school and I was over the moon and really encouraged by how my art was received!   I had a small collection of winter cards and original art and they flew off my little table.  I have always loved selling in person and continue to do markets when I can, especially around Christmas time.

Pedddle: What challenges did you face when you first launched your business?

KamsArthouse: Since the shop opened I have found the marketing side of business a real challenge.  I’ve learned the hard way that you really do only get out what you put in.

Deer Dawn: I think the biggest challenge I have faced  starting my business has been creating an online presence for myself and being found in the huge world wide web!  Being a one woman show, it’s a challenge juggling all the hats you need to wear.  But I keep my art at the centre and it guides me back when I get lost at times trying to figure out.. Instagram, Facebook, etsy , folksy,  pinterest, my accounts, websites, markets, wholesale and more! 🙂

Pedddle: What’s next for your business this year – anything you’re planning, looking forward to, are there any new products/ranges etc?

KamsArthouse: At present, I create prints from my original artwork but am in the process of creating gift cards, tote bags and stickers too. I am also hoping to sell at markets in real life and am working towards stocking some of my products within local independent retailers. I only use top quality archival paper for the best colour reproduction and resistance to fading and any packaging used is British and made from recyclable or compostable materials.

Deer Dawn: My main focus now is Christmas…  Especially with greeting cards you need to have those new designs ready early!  So while you are enjoying the summer sun I will be embracing snowy woodland scenes to keep me cool.  My bigger plans as I look into the future for deer dawn is to expand on my personalised  range, offer other paper goods such as gift tags & gift wrap and just keep the paints flowing.
